Potato of Kato Nevrokopi

The potato of Kato Nevrokopi is well-known throughout Greece for its superior quality and unique taste. Its cultivation started in the basin in the mid-1920s and reached its peak level around 1960. Since 2002 it has been labeled as a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) product certified by the European Union. It constitutes the main crop of the area planted in April and harvested mainly in September. Today, more than 25,000 stremmas (6 acres) of various varieties are cultivated using the integrated crop management approach.

There are several potato packing plants in the Municipality of Kato Nevrokopi with the Agricultural Cooperative Union, established in 1923, being the oldest one.
